Felonies & Misdemeanors


A felony is defined as “a crime, typically one involving violence, regarded as more serious than a misdemeanor, and usually punishable by imprisonment for more than one year or by death”. Examples of felonies may be:

  • Assault (in the 1st degree)
  • Burglary (in the 2nd degree) / Theft (in the 1st degree)

Felonies are ranked and given various consequences depending on the crime’s traits. In general, felonies are organized like so:

Class “C” Felony

  • $125,000 fine
  • Up to 5 years imprisonment

Class “B” Felony

  • $250,000 fine
  • Up to 10 years imprisonment

Class “A” Felony

  • $375,000 fine
  • Up to 20 years imprisonment

A misdemeanor is defined as a non-indictable offense, and is less serious than a felony. Examples of misdemeanors may be:

  • Assault (in the 4th Degree)
  • Carrying of Concealed Weapons
  • Disorderly Conduct
  • DUI / DUII
  • Harassment
  • Resisting Arrest
  • Sex Crimes
  • Theft (in the 2nd Degree)
  • Theft in the Third Degree

Within the scope of misdemeanors, they are then ranked according to the gravity of their negligence and follow the general penalties:

Class “C” Misdemeanor

  • $1,250 fine
  • 30 days in jail


Class “B” Misdemeanor

  • $3,500 fine
  • 6 months in jail


Class “A” Misdemeanor

  • $6,250 fine
  • 1 year in jail
