Penalties for Multiple DUI Offenders
Multiple DUI offenders face serious penalties when faced with a second DUI offense. When a DUI is not yet a criminal charge, they are referred to as civil DUI charges.
Upon a second DUI, a civil charge may include:
- Up to one year in jail
- A $2,000 fine
- 1 year license suspension
- Mandatory ignition interlock device installed in offender’s car
Once you hit a third DUI offense, you are in even more trouble. Not only will your driver’s license be revoked for life (yes, life) you face as little as a $2,000 in charges and a minimum of 90 days in prison. Those are just the baseline consequences. Any additional offenses could incur higher jail time and/or steeper fines, especially if it is a criminal DUI charge.
The penalties increase if the driver’s BAC (blood alcohol content) was 0.15 or higher, or if there were other aggravating circumstances such as driving drunk with a child in the car.
